Visitor guide system

Digitales Besucherleitsystem Karlsruhe

  • Client

    Karlsruhe Tourismus GmbH

  • Task

Implementation of a digital visitor guidance system for the city of Karlsruhe

  • Project period

    January until September 2025

Everyone knows Karlsruhe from the news when an important ruling is announced by Germany's highest federal courts. The preconception of Karlsruhe as a ‘boring civil servant town’ does it an injustice, because behind Karlsruhe lies a city with outstanding cultural offerings, lots of green spaces and even more Baden lifestyle. Its unique fan-shaped layout, Germany's highest courts and numerous small monuments, fountains and squares make Karlsruhe unmistakable. A real special feature: almost all of the sights can be easily reached on foot.

KTG planned to introduce 40 interactive hotel steles in 2025 to boost city tourism. The project is part of a joint initiative by the city administration, KTG Karlsruhe Tourismus GmbH, the DEHOGA district office in Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Chamber of Industry and Commerce. It is the first cooperation project to be financed by the new city tax (overnight stay tax).

TourComm designs a digital visitor guidance system for the city of Karlsruhe

An integral part of the innovative software solution on the steles of our partner netvico GmbH from Stuttgart was the introduction of a web-based digital visitor guidance system. The aim of this project was to develop a clear and appealing system that primarily enables tourists to find their way around the city centre and the districts of Durlach, Rüppurr and others more easily. On the one hand, tourist POIs were to be highlighted in order to facilitate visits and exploration of the region, while on the other hand, the focus was on experiences, i.e. bookable offers and current events in the surrounding area.

Procedure and content

The project was launched in February 2025. Together with the client, relevant POIs for the future guidance system were identified and prioritised. The focus was on POIs with open data sets and corresponding Creative Commons licences. In the interests of internationality, the availability of English and, where applicable, French translations of the content also played an important role. All POI data was synchronised directly from the DZT Knowledge Graph via the interface integrated in the MAQNIFY© Guide.
As part of the project, the screen design of the software interface was developed and the individual styling of the mobile guide was set up. Both are visually based on Karlsruhe's CI specifications to ensure cross-platform recognition of the brand identity.

Pilot project: stele integration

For the first time, the contents of the MAQNIFY© Guide were integrated into netvico's digital steles via iframe. This cooperation will also enable completely new applications for tourism in the future. A feature developed specifically for KTG was the dynamic generation of QR codes from stele content. This allows users to take the content displayed on the steles directly with them on their smartphones, thus carrying information and directions directly in their pockets.
